Esteban Buch is the director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. His studies are mainly focused on the relationship between music and politics in the twentieth century. He has also devoted important volumes to figures of the classical and contemporary musical canon such as Beethoven, Schoenberg and Ginastera. He has investigated political music such as national anthems and the relationship between music and political violence during World War I, the Third Reich and military dictatorships in Argentina. His interests also include the relationship between savante and popular music (particularly tango) from the perspective of the sociological theory of culture.
