Michael Haefliger
Michael Haefliger began studying violin and piano at the age of six, completing his violin studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1983. He then studied management at the School of Economics, Law and Social Sciences at the University of St. Gallen, earning an Executive MBA in 1999. In 1986 he co-founded the “Young Artists in Concert” Festival in Davos, which he directed until 1998. Since 1999, he has been Executive and Artistic Director of the Lucerne Festival, strengthening the institution’s commitment to new music and young audiences. His many initiatives include the creation, together with Claudio Abbado, of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in 2003 and the Lucerne Festival Academy with Pierre Boulez. In 2021, he also founded the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO), a high-level orchestra dedicated to contemporary music, which also performs abroad at renowned festivals and music organisations.
In autumn 2013, together with Anish Kapoor and Arata Isozaki, he launched the Lucerne Festival Ark Nova, a mobile concert hall to be donated to the Japanese population living in the area affected by the 2011 earthquake.
Michael Haefliger ha iniziato a studiare violino e pianoforte all’età di sei anni, completando gli studi di violino alla Juilliard School of Music di New York nel 1983. Successivamente ha studiato management presso le Scuole di Economia, Diritto e Scienze Sociali dell’Università di San Gallo, conseguendo l’Executive MBA nel 1999.Nel 1986 ha co-fondato il Festival “Young Artists in Concert” di Davos, che ha diretto fino al 1998. Dal 1999 è direttore esecutivo e artistico del Festival di Lucerna, rafforzando l’impegno dell’istituzione verso la nuova musica e il pubblico giovane. Tra le sue numerose iniziative, la creazione, insieme a Claudio Abbado, della Lucerne Festival Orchestra nel 2003, della Lucerne Festival Academy con Pierre Boulez. Nel 2021 ha inoltre fondato la Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO), un’orchestra di alto livello dedicata alla musica contemporanea, che si esibisce anche all’estero presso rinomati festival e organizzazioni musicali.
Nell’autunno del 2013, insieme ad Anish Kapoor e Arata Isozaki, ha lanciato il Lucerne Festival Ark Nova, una sala da concerto mobile da donare alla popolazione giapponese che vive nell’area colpita dal terremoto del 2011.
