Ahmad Naser Sarmast
Ahmad Naser Sarmast is an Afghan ethnomusicologist. After studying music in his country, he graduated in 1993 with a degree in musicology from the P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow. The Taliban’s rise to power forced him and his family of musicians to flee to Australia, where he earned a PhD in musicology from Monash University in Melbourne in 2005. He returned home after the fall of the Taliban regime, invited by the Afghan Ministry of Education to recover the country’s musical traditions suppressed by the Islamicists. With funding from the World Bank, Sarmast founded the Afghan National Institute of Music in 2010, integrating Western art music programmes and traditional Afghan music, and providing free music education to the economically disadvantaged, orphans and women, who within a few years had reached a third of enrolment. Sarmast forms the National Symphony Orchestra and the Afghan Youth Orchestra, which performed in prestigious venues around the world. After suffering a suicide bombing that seriously injures him, Sarmast returns to his post and founds the Zohra Orchestra, that is composed and conducted by women only. However, the return of the Talibans in 2021 forces him and his students into exile. Thanks to the support of Yo Yo Ma and various government institutions, ANIM found a home in Lisbon. Zohra has resumed her activities, and after years of waiting and preparations, the women orchestra will be present in January in Italy, in Pesaro, beside the members of the Orchestra Olimpia.
Etnomusicologo afghano, dopo aver studiato musica nel suo paese, nel 1993 si è laureato in musicologia presso il Conservatorio “P. I. Čajkovskij” di Mosca. L’ascesa al potere dei talebani costringe lui e la sua famiglia di musicisti a rifugiarsi in Australia, dove nel 2005 consegue un PhD in musicologia presso la Monash University di Melbourne. Torna in patria dopo la caduta del regime talebano, invitato dal ministero dell’educazione afghano per recuperare le tradizioni musicali del paese soppresse dal regime precedente. Grazie al finanziamento della Banca Mondiale, nel 2010 Sarmast fonda l’Afghan National Institute of Music, integrando programmi di musica colta occidentale e tradizionale afghana e garantendo l’istruzione musicale gratuita alle fasce economicamente più disagiate, agli orfani e alle donne, che in pochi anni raggiungono un terzo degli iscritti. Sarmast costituisce la National Symphony Orchestra e l’Afghan Youth Orchestra che si esibiscono in sedi prestigiose in tutto il mondo. Dopo aver subito un attentato suicida che lo ferisce gravemente, Sarmast torna al suo posto e fonda l’Orchestra Zohra, composta e diretta da sole donne. Tuttavia, il ritorno dei talebani al potere nel 2021 costringe lui e i suoi allievi all’esilio. Grazie al sostegno di Yo Yo Ma e varie istituzioni governative, l’ANIM ha trovato accoglienza a Lisbona. Zohra ha ricominciato la sua attività, e dopo anni di attese e preparativi sarà presente a Gennaio in Italia, a Pesaro, accanto alle professoresse dell’Orchestra Olimpia.
