The instrumental music of Nicolò Porpora

As a result of sojourns in Naples, Mantua, Venice, London, Dresden, and Vienna, Porpora developed an international style. The author provides a style-critical analysis which demonstrates eclectic tendencies in Porpora’s instrumental works. A synthesis of the national styles and a fusion of Baroque and galant elements are both evident, and suggest that in some respects Porpora was a precursor of the Viennese Classic style.
